Oscar winner praises CNN’s Kaitlan Collins after Trump attack: ‘What real integrity is’
The actor also explained why he didn't attend the Academy Awards.
Academy Award winner Sean Penn is publicly backing CNN anchor Kaitlan Collins, praising the journalist for demonstrating what he calls “real integrity” during a tense standoff with President Donald Trump.
A Notable Exchange
The praise came during a Friday conversation between the two at the 25th annual Tribeca Festival. Penn didn't hold back, telling Collins that her approach to covering the president has defined true journalistic integrity. Reflecting on their viral confrontation, Penn added, “if anybody ever had any question of who’d win the stare-down contest, I think this week was a killer,” per Variety.
Why Penn Skipped the Oscars
During the same appearance, the 65-year-old actor addressed his notable absence from the Academy Awards. Penn explained that his decision was rooted in a personal desire to avoid large crowds. “It’s not just (that it’s) an awards show,” Penn noted. “It would be the same if this group was going to an afterparty and one stepped into that. That always represented social discomfort for me; too many people. I’m now down, committed for life, that I won’t go anywhere to be in a designated group beyond eight people.”
The Origins of the Trump-Collins Clash
The tension between the White House and the CNN reporter reached a boiling point last week when Trump was questioned regarding the Department of Justice’s decision to abandon its $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization fund.” As reported by 205focus.com, the president shifted the focus of his response to attack Collins directly.
“CNN’s a very corrupt organization with a corrupt reporter standing right there,” Trump stated. He continued, “Never smiles. A young, beautiful woman. Never smiles. I never see a smile on her face. I see her standing there with hatred in her eyes, like, she has hatred because we have borders, because we have a strong military, because we cut our taxes, because we do things that everybody wanted.”
Collins Responds
Collins addressed the personal nature of the comments on Wednesday’s edition of “The Source.” She contextualized the event for viewers, noting that the president’s irritation was visible well before the actual question-and-answer portion of the exchange began.
“As you’re about to hear in his answer here, the president seemed clearly irritated when he was asked earlier today why his administration says it is not moving forward with that $1.8 billion anti-weaponization fund, as they have called it,” she said, per Mediate. “And just to note, as you’re about to listen to this, this first exchange actually occurred before I had yet to ask the president a question.”
