Oscar-winning actress warned of brain aneurysm during Cannes favorite film: ‘Thought I was about to die’

Academy Award-winning actress Penelope Cruz delivered a startling revelation during Friday's press conference at the Cannes Film Festival, sharing that she was warned of a potential brain aneurysm while filming the festival favorite, The Black Ball.
A Terrifying Mid-Production Discovery
Cruz described the harrowing experience as she prepared for a scene: "And then when we’re about to go out, I was putting on my wig, and they said, ‘Oh, apparently you have some brain aneurysm.’" The star admitted the news was jarring, noting, "I thought I was about to die. This is something that was totally surreal in my life."
Determination to Continue
Despite the frightening diagnosis, Cruz managed to finish her work on the production. According to a report by Variety, she received medical clearance the following day, which allowed her to continue with the film's singing and dancing requirements. Reflecting on the moment, Cruz said, "I thought, ‘It’s a total miracle. I have to, I must have this in me.’”
About The Black Ball
In the film, which features Cruz in the role of a cabaret singer, the actress is joined by an ensemble cast including Glenn Close, Guitarricadelafuente, Miguel Bernardeau, Lola Dueñas, and Carlos González. The Black Ball is scheduled to premiere in Spain on Oct. 2 via Elastica Films.
