Qualifying for Huntsville city election begins Tuesday

The race for Huntsville’s future officially begins this week. Candidate qualifying for the upcoming municipal election opens Tuesday and runs through 5 p.m. on June 23.

Key Seats on the Ballot

Voters will head to the polls on August 25 to decide the leadership for Districts 2, 3, and 4 on both the City Council and the Board of Education. While Mayor Tommy Battle and Council members Michelle Watkins (District 1) and John Meredith (District 5) are not up for reelection this cycle, several high-profile races are shaping up for the other districts.

Incumbents David Little (District 2), Jennie Robinson (District 3), and Bill Kling (District 4) are all facing challenges. Software engineer Thomas Casez has stepped up to challenge Little in District 2, while business owner Liliana Peinder is running for the seat currently held by Robinson. In District 4, attorney Will Pylant is vying to unseat Kling.

The Board of Education is also seeing activity, with Districts 2, 3, and 4 members Holly McCarty, Andrea Alvarez, and Ryan Renaud up for reelection. Board members Chaundra Jones (District 1) and Carlos Mathews (District 5) will remain in their positions until 2028.

How to Get Involved

Interested candidates can secure their qualifying forms at the City Clerk’s office, located on the third floor of Huntsville City Hall at 305 Fountain Circle.

City Clerk Shaundrika Edwards is encouraging residents to prepare early. “Voting is a critical part of our democracy, and we encourage everyone to cast their ballot in the municipal election,” Edwards said. “We also urge voters to verify their voting location in advance to avoid any confusion on election day.”
