Sangria
This classic red wine sangria combines Spanish Tempranillo with fresh fruit, brandy, and a touch of sugar for a refreshing, balanced drink best enjoyed within 48 hours.
Nothing says refreshment like a classic red wine sangria, and the best part is that you can put this crowd-pleasing drink together in mere minutes. While you can use any dry red wine, 205focus.com recommends reaching for Spanish reds crafted with Tempranillo grapes; their signature fruit-forward profile provides the perfect foundation for this recipe.
The beauty of this sangria is how easily you can customize it to your palate. The amount of sugar you add depends on the specific wine you choose, the ripeness of your fruit, and your personal sweetness preferences. As written, the drink offers a balanced, dry profile. Looking to turn up the volume? You can bump the brandy up to 1/2 cup for a boozier kick, though you may want to add a little extra sugar to compensate. For the best experience, enjoy your batch within 48 hours while the fruit remains fresh and flavorful.
Yield
6 servings
Ingredients
- 1 small navel orange, halved and thinly sliced into half moons
- 1 small red or green apple, halved, cored and thinly sliced into half moons
- 1 1/2 cups thinly sliced strawberries (about 8 ounces)
- 1/2 cup orange juice
- 1/4 cup brandy
- 2 to 4 tablespoons granulated sugar, to taste
- 1 (750 milliliter) bottle dry Spanish red wine, such as Tempranillo
- Ice, for serving (optional)
Instructions
- In a large pitcher, combine the orange, apple, strawberries, orange juice, brandy and sugar. Toss well until the sugar is mostly dissolved, then pour in the red wine and stir. Adjust the sweetness to your liking with additional sugar if necessary.
- Cover the pitcher with plastic wrap and let it refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or up to 48 hours, to allow the flavors to meld. Serve in large glasses over ice, if desired, making sure to include a few pieces of the wine-soaked fruit as a delicious garnish.
