A recent report from the Library of Congress has shed light on the heavy toll of Operation Epic Fury, the military campaign against Iran that kicked off on February 28. According to the data, at least 42 aircraft have been either destroyed or damaged throughout the course of the mission.

Tracking the losses

The Congressional Research Service pulled together this information by analyzing news reports and official statements from Department of Defense personnel. Their findings were summarized in a three-page report released on May 13, titled U.S. Aircraft Combat Losses in Operation Epic Fury: Considerations for Congress. Notably, the report confirms that 25 of the 42 affected aircraft were drones.

Rising costs of engagement

Beyond the hardware, the financial impact of the operation is climbing. During a House Appropriations defense subcommittee hearing on May 12, acting Pentagon Comptroller Jules W. Hurst III reported that the cost of military operations has reached approximately $29 billion. This marks a significant jump from the $25 billion estimate Hurst provided on April 29.

"A lot of that increase comes from having a refined estimate on repair or replacement costs for equipment," Hurst said.

According to the Army Times, which covered the House subcommittee hearing, the $29 billion figure provided by the Pentagon does not yet account for the expenses required to repair damaged U.S. air bases and other regional installations.
