South Alabama teen killed in crash on way to UAB college orientation

A south Alabama community is grieving the tragic loss of 18-year-old Rylie McGill, a standout student whose bright future was cut short in a fatal car accident.

A Journey Interrupted

According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, the incident occurred at approximately 4:45 a.m. on Tuesday. McGill was traveling on I-65 in Baldwin County when her 2016 Hyundai Elantra left the roadway and struck a tree.

McGill was on her way to attend college orientation at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Her mother, Kristin Carroll, told Fox10 News that her daughter was heading to campus with a full ride scholarship and immense excitement for the next chapter of her life.

A Legacy of Excellence

A recent graduate of Blount High School, McGill finished her secondary education with top honors. She was a dedicated leader, serving as the academic team president, president of the Future Business Leaders of America, and a member of the National Honor Society.

“She had so many things that she wanted to do,” Carroll shared. “Her biggest goal was she wanted to be a journalism professor. She wanted to write. She just loved writing. She loved helping people.”

Remembering a 'Bright Light'

The outpouring of grief from friends, school staff, and the community has been profound. Colleagues on the academic team paid tribute to their fallen leader on Facebook, calling her their captain and noting that her light would continue to shine in the hearts of those who loved her.

“Rylie was a bright light whose warmth, intelligence, and determination touched everyone around her,” the team stated. “She had a gift for making others feel seen, and her smile could light up any room she entered.”

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
