Summer heat kicks in this week: How hot will it feel in Alabama?
Heat index expected to get into the triple digits.
Summer is officially making its presence known across Alabama. According to forecasters, residents should prepare for a significant uptick in heat as we move through the work week.
Rising Temps and Humidity
The National Weather Service reports that high temperatures will remain locked in the upper 80s and low 90s through the upcoming weekend. While the thermometer readings are notable, the high humidity levels will make it feel considerably more intense outdoors.
On Tuesday, high temperatures are expected to reach the upper 80s to low 90s statewide. Western Alabama may see conditions a degree or two warmer than eastern regions. Residents should keep an eye on the latest forecast for specific local details.
The 'Feels Like' Factor
The heat index, or apparent temperature, is expected to range from the low 90s to the upper 90s today. As the week progresses, the heat risk increases. The weather service utilizes a health-based “stress meter” for the human body, and parts of the state are currently under a moderate heat risk category. In their outlook, orange-shaded zones represent moderate risk, while yellow areas indicate a minor risk.
The warmth will likely peak on Friday. With air temperatures projected in the low to mid-90s, the heat index could climb into the triple digits by the end of the week.
Looking Ahead
While typical summertime scattered afternoon rain chances remain in the mix, a cold front is expected to bring more widespread precipitation over the weekend. This shift could finally provide a reprieve from the stifling conditions.
Data from the Climate Prediction Center indicates a 33-40 percent probability that north and west Alabama may see cooler-than-average temperatures from June 14-18. Most of the state is trending toward near-normal temperatures, though the southeast corner faces a 33-40 percent chance of remaining warmer than average during that same period.
