The meticulous health strategy Auburn basketball used to avoid another injury-plagued season
The Tigers implemented thorough medical evaluations for all transfer portal additions after injuries limited the team to seven or eight healthy players last season.
With the commitment of Lithuanian guard Mantas Rubštavičius locked in, head coach Steven Pearl confirmed that the Auburn basketball roster for the 2026-27 campaign is officially complete.
A Meticulous Approach to Roster Building
After a frustrating previous season that saw the rotation dwindle to just seven or eight healthy players—partly due to lingering injuries for Emeka Opurum and Abdul Bashir—Pearl and his staff overhauled their approach to the transfer portal. This offseason, the Tigers prioritized medical transparency, requiring thorough physicals during every recruiting visit to ensure incoming talent is fully prepared for the grind of the season.
"One of the biggest things that we did going into this season was we were way more thorough in our evaluations of people’s health," Pearl explained. "We really made sure that we did physicals on every single visit just to make sure that guys coming in were healthy."
Managing Past Injuries
The incoming class includes several players who dealt with injuries last year, specifically Owen Freeman, George Kimble III, and Adam Olsen. Despite those histories, Pearl remains confident in his medical staff's assessment of the group.
"Without the full clearance of our medical staff, we may have looked elsewhere. But all those guys were in a really good spot," Pearl noted.
Looking Toward Greece
The wheels are already in motion for the upcoming season, with players arriving on campus this past weekend and structured team practices set to tip off in early June. A major highlight of the summer will be the team’s foreign tour to Greece in August.
Pearl emphasized that the trip is about much more than just basketball. "The biggest value is, one, getting to spend time with one another and building that camaraderie and brotherhood. But two, getting to play in a little more structured environment earlier than mid-October," he said. "It will give us a better picture going into the year of what we need to improve on and where we’re at as a team."
