‘The War of the Worlds’ star dead at 96

The science fiction world is mourning the loss of Ann Robinson, the iconic actress celebrated for her lead role in the 1953 classic The War of the Worlds. Robinson passed away at age 96.

A Lasting Legacy

As reported by her granddaughter, Tori Bravo, in The Hollywood Reporter, Robinson died at her Los Angeles home on Sept. 26. While the news has only recently come to light, her impact on the genre remains undeniable.

Robinson began her career as a stunt performer before catching her big break at Paramount Pictures. She was ultimately cast as Sylvia Van Buren, a library science teacher, by legendary producer and effects master George Pal. She later reflected on the longevity of her signature role, once telling author Tom Weaver for his 1994 book Attack of the Monster Movie Makers, via The Hollywood Reporter, that she had arguably earned more mileage from the film than Vivien Leigh did from Gone With the Wind.

A Career Rooted in Sci-Fi

Robinson’s dedication to the franchise extended well beyond the original 1953 release. She reprised the role of Sylvia in episodes of the 1988-90 syndicated War of the Worlds television series and was even invited by Steven Spielberg to make an appearance in his 2005 reimagining starring Tom Cruise.

Recalling that experience to Nick Thomas in 2016, Robinson shared a lighthearted moment with the famous director. She noted that Spielberg, who grew up a fan of her original work, was "so adorable" on set as he playfully asked to have his picture taken with her during the production.
