This Alabama city is ranked one of the most desirable places to live in the entire country

Hoover is officially shining on the national stage. The Birmingham suburb has earned a prestigious spot as one of the best places to live in the entire country, showcasing a stellar reputation for quality of life, economic growth, and affordability.

A Top-Tier National Ranking

According to the latest annual survey by U.S. News, Hoover secured the sixth overall position out of 250 cities for the 2026-27 rankings. To climb to the top of this list, the city was evaluated on its robust job market, overall value, and high standard of living.

The timing of the announcement couldn't be better. Mayor Nick Derzis noted that the recognition arrives as the city prepares to host fans from across the Southeast for this week’s SEC Baseball Tournament. "Visitors who come here quickly discover what our residents already know — Hoover is a vibrant, welcoming city and one of the very best places in America to call home," Derzis said.

By the Numbers

Home to approximately 90,000 residents, Hoover stands as Alabama’s largest suburban city. Since its incorporation in 1967, the area has transformed into a thriving economic hub. Today, the median household income sits at $104,005, comfortably outpacing the national median of $83,181.

For prospective residents, the housing market remains a significant draw, with a median home value of $382,915 and a median rent of roughly $1,145. Economic indicators are equally positive: the city’s 2023 unemployment rate of 2.6% fell well below the national average of 4.5%, and commuters enjoy an average travel time of just 23 minutes.

Living in Hoover

Beyond the numbers, Hoover’s appeal is built on local staples. Residents and visitors alike enjoy amenities such as the Riverchase Galleria, the Hoover Met Complex, the Hoover Library, and the tranquil scenery of Aldridge Gardens, alongside a diverse array of local dining and businesses.

This latest honor adds to a growing trophy case for the city. Hoover was previously recognized by Livability.com as a top 100 city in 2025 and was identified as an up-and-coming hub for prosperity by MoneyGeek in 2024.

In the U.S. News top 250 rankings, Hoover currently sits behind Carmel and Fishers in Indiana, Flower Mound in Texas, Ankeny in Iowa, and Johns Creek in Georgia.
