Trojans meet Rider in loser’s bracket game Saturday

Troy baseball facing elimination after loss to Miami in Gainesville Regional

It was a night of high stakes and high drama at the NCAA Gainesville Regional, but for Troy, the outcome in the opener was a bitter pill to swallow. After surging back to tie the game in the eighth inning, the Trojans couldn't keep pace as Miami exploded for five runs in the bottom of the frame, sealing a 10-5 victory for the Hurricanes.

Elimination Looming

The loss forces Troy (32-30) into an immediate must-win scenario. The third-seeded Trojans are set to face Rider (33-19) in an elimination game scheduled for 2 p.m. Central on Saturday. The pressure is on for the Trojans to keep their season alive after the late-night heartbreak in Florida.

A Rain-Delayed Rollercoaster

Inclement weather wreaked havoc on the schedule, pushing the first pitch back more than four hours. When action finally got underway at 10:15 p.m. local time, second-seeded Miami (39-18) jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead behind a Vance Sheahan solo home run and a three-run shot from Derek Williams.

Troy clawed back into the contest throughout the middle innings. Blake Cavill and Sean Darnell teamed up to put the Trojans on the board in the fourth, and Cavill struck again in the fifth with a two-run double that trimmed the deficit to 4-3. Defensively, the Trojans stayed gritty, highlighted by a spectacular leaping grab by Drew Nelson in left field to rob Gabriel Milano of a home run.

The Eighth Inning Surge

With momentum shifting, Nelson delivered a massive blow in the top of the eighth, crushing a two-run homer to tie the score at 5-5. However, the tie was short-lived. Miami’s offense roared to life in the bottom of the inning against Troy reliever Tommy Egan, rattling off five runs on a series of doubles and timely hits to pull away for good.

While Dylan Glidewell (4-0) ultimately picked up the win for the Hurricanes, Tommy Egan (5-5) was tagged with the loss. Troy finished with nine hits but struggled to overcome six runners left on base and three fielding errors. Miami moves on to face top-seeded Florida in the winner's bracket on Saturday at 7 p.m., while Troy turns its focus toward a do-or-die battle against Rider.
