Tuberville releases long-awaited tax returns, says he’s lived in Alabama since 2018

U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville’s campaign has unveiled a set of partially redacted state income tax records, aiming to solidify claims that the gubernatorial hopeful has maintained residency in Alabama since 2018.

The Residency Debate

As Tuberville continues his pursuit of the governor's office, questions regarding his primary residence have persisted for years. While the candidate holds property in both Alabama and Florida, state requirements demand candidates for governor maintain residency within Alabama for seven years.

In a formal filing to the Alabama Republican Party, an attorney for the campaign stated, “The evidence shows that Coach Tuberville has consistently claimed Alabama as his residence for years.” The filing cited his history of maintaining Alabama voter registration, holding an Alabama driver’s license, and fulfilling his duties as a U.S. Senator.

New Documentation Provided

The campaign provided seven years of state income tax returns, spanning 2018 to 2025, to the state party ahead of a scheduled hearing regarding his candidacy. The documents, which were shared with Ken McFeeters—a GOP rival challenging Tuberville's residency—list an Auburn address.

Despite the release, the documents have not silenced the opposition. McFeeters remains skeptical, asserting that the records fail to address the core of his concerns. He indicated plans to pursue a subpoena for the senator's wife, Suzanne Tuberville, to further clarify the family's living situation.

Expert and Financial Context

Susan Hamill, a University of Alabama professor emerita and tax law expert, noted that filing state tax returns is not an automatic proof of residency. “The income tax returns alone just don’t resolve the issue,” Hamill explained. “A tax return doesn’t make you a resident citizen. It doesn’t make you a resident.”

Property records further complicate the narrative, showing a $270,000 Auburn home with a homestead exemption alongside a $4 million Florida beach residence. Notably, Tuberville voted in Florida as recently as 2018.

The released tax documents show the Tubervilles filed jointly and, in their 2018 return, cited August 1, 2018, as the start of their Alabama residency. However, the returns lack signatures and dates, and the campaign did not immediately respond to requests for comment from 205focus.com.

Background

Tuberville, who previously coached at Auburn University, Texas Tech, and the University of Cincinnati, was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2020. Throughout his time in Washington, he has faced scrutiny over his stock trading habits and financial disclosures, with previous reports estimating his net worth at approximately $4.5 million. While the Alabama gubernatorial race requires a seven-year residency, it is worth noting that U.S. Senate candidates face a lower threshold, requiring only one day of residency in the state to qualify.
