Walmart looking at building $20 million neighborhood market in Birmingham metro city
The retail giant is seeking $3 million in incentives from the city.
Retail giant Walmart is setting its sights on a significant expansion in the Birmingham metro area. According to city documents, the company is looking to transform a former Winn-Dixie location in Vestavia Hills into a new Walmart Neighborhood Market.
Project Details and Timeline
The proposed site at 3925 Crosshaven Drive is currently under contract for purchase by Walmart. The property is owned by Cahaba Heights Partners, under the management of Len Shannon and Derek Waltchack. The retail chain plans to demolish the existing structure to make way for a modern, 45,000-square-foot facility featuring a pharmacy, groceries, and general merchandise.
The Vestavia Hills City Council is set to review an incentive agreement for the development this coming Monday at 5:30 p.m.
Investment and Economic Impact
The ambitious project carries an estimated price tag of $20 million. Once the store is operational, Walmart projects it will generate approximately $25 million in annual sales. To facilitate this development, the city is weighing a 10-year sales tax incentive agreement, which would be capped at $3 million. For comparison, the city previously greenlit a similar incentive package for the Liberty Park Publix project, which had a maximum rebate of slightly over $4.2 million.
As 205focus.com reports, the long-term outlook for the city remains positive. Over the first decade of the store's operation, the city anticipates a cumulative increase in new revenue totaling $11.1 million.
