Watch the $124 million transformation of the former Brookwood Village mall
Crews last month began demolishing the old Macy’s store at Brookwood Village, as work continues to transform the shopping center.
The Birmingham metro area's landscape is shifting as the former Brookwood Village mall undergoes a massive $124 million transformation. Once a bustling retail hub for the region, the site is currently being reinvented as a premier health care destination.
A New Medical Powerhouse
Construction efforts, managed by Brasfield & Gorrie, kicked off earlier this spring at the site of the former Belk store. This space is being converted into a sprawling 135,000-square-foot orthopedic clinic for Andrews Sports Medicine. Once finished, the facility is expected to stand as one of the largest ambulatory surgical centers in the Southeast.
Milestones and Demolition
Progress is moving quickly at the former shopping landmark. According to recent project updates, crews have finalized shallow foundations and retaining wall installations, while structural steel work continues to expand the building's footprint on the west and south sides. Interior framing, alongside mechanical, electrical, and plumbing work, is also well underway.
Significant changes have been visible throughout the property since demolition began in March. Last month, crews transitioned to the removal of the old Macy’s store as the site undergoes a complete overhaul. This follows an April announcement by owners Fairway Investments and Pope & Land Real Estate—who purchased the mall property in 2021—regarding the sale of a portion of the site to Creekside Brookwood LLC.
Looking Ahead
Brookwood Village, which first opened its doors in 1974, served as a retail staple for decades before falling victim to the decline of traditional shopping centers and the rise of e-commerce. Following the closure of its final business in 2024, the property is now on track to find new life as a medical facility by next summer.
