When will Brian Branch be back for the Detroit Lions?
The former Alabama defensive back finished last season on injured reserve.
The Detroit Lions are navigating an uncertain timeline for defensive back Brian Branch as the team wraps up its offseason program. The former Alabama standout has been sidelined since suffering an Achilles tendon injury during Detroit’s 44-30 win over the Dallas Cowboys on Dec. 4. Following his departure from the lineup, the Lions struggled down the stretch, dropping three consecutive games and missing out on the postseason.
Managing the Recovery
Lions head coach Dan Campbell addressed the media on Thursday, offering a candid—if cautious—update on Branch's status. When asked if the defensive playmaker would be ready for the start of training camp next month, Campbell opted to keep expectations flexible.
"I’m going to just go ahead and widen the window, so we don’t have to talk about it anymore," Campbell said. "Let’s just go ahead and say December, and then anything before that is a bonus."
Despite the cautious approach, Campbell left the door open for an earlier return, specifically regarding the season opener against the New Orleans Saints on Sept. 13. "He could be," Campbell noted. "There’s no setbacks with him. That’s what I can tell you. He’s doing a good job. He’s putting in the work. But until we really get closer, I hate to start throwing a timetable on him."
A Key Piece of the Lions' Defense
Since entering the league as a second-round pick from Alabama in the 2023 NFL Draft, Branch has become an integral part of the Detroit defense. His rookie campaign saw him finish fifth in Defensive Rookie of the Year voting during a season where the Lions reached the NFC Championship Game. By 2024, Branch had elevated his game to Pro Bowl status, anchoring a team that achieved a franchise-best 15-2 regular-season record.
The impact of his absence is clear. At the time of his injury in 2025, Branch stood as the only player in the NFL to record at least 75 tackles, 2.5 sacks, and nine passes defended.
