Who will be Alabama football’s defensive back depth in 2026?
Alabama has a loaded defensive backs group for 2026. Here's who could provide key depth.
When looking at the Alabama football roster for the 2026 season, the defensive back room stands out as arguably the most complete unit on the team. While the Crimson Tide must move on after the departure of Domani Jackson to the NFL Draft, the secondary remains bolstered by the return of key starters. Cornerbacks Zabien Brown and Dijon Lee are back, as are safeties Bray Hubbard and Keon Sabb and nickelback Red Morgan.
Building the Bench
A championship-caliber season requires depth. As we look ahead to 2026, here are five players prepared to make a significant impact when called upon.
O'Neal's Transition
Junior transfer O'Neal arrives in Tuscaloosa after beginning his career at FCS program Mercer, where he primarily saw time at safety. While he is making the move to cornerback for the Tide, his 6-foot-4 frame offers the kind of length defensive coordinator Kane Wommack values, similar to what we have seen from Dijon Lee.
Wommack was impressed with the newcomer during spring practice. "Kid’s great," Wommack noted. "He’s hungry. He wants to take a step forward. He knows that there’s some things from a fundamental standpoint that he could grow in, and he’s like a sponge right now."
Developmental Talents
The secondary also features players looking to capitalize on their previous growth. Mincey, who initially joined the program as a cornerback in 2024 before transitioning to safety during the ReliaQuest Bowl, continues to sharpen his craft. After contributing on special teams and defense throughout the 2025 campaign, the former four-star recruit is aiming for a breakout role this year.
Meanwhile, Kirkpatrick is back in the fold for 2026. After a suspension hindered his progress last season, the rising junior—son of an Alabama star and NFL veteran—is ready to carve out a bigger role. He showed flashes of potential during the A-Day scrimmage with a notable interception, positioning himself as a primary option should injuries impact the depth chart.
High-Impact Freshmen
Alabama has infused the roster with elite youth, headlined by incoming five-star safety prospect Edwards. As the No. 2 safety in the 2026 class per 247Sports composite rankings and a former Maryland Gatorade Player of the Year, the 6-foot-2, 221-pound freshman already possesses the physical tools to make an immediate push for playing time.
He is joined by another five-star addition, Edmonds, the No. 4 ranked cornerback in the 2026 class. Standing 6-foot-3, Edmonds gained valuable experience during the team's College Football Playoff bowl practices. While he has a deep group of veterans ahead of him, his talent level could earn him an early look in the rotation.
