Young Birmingham engineering students honored by historic women’s group
More than two dozen future engineers and innovators from Birmingham high school were celebrated by a historic women’s club.
A bright group of future engineers and innovators from Birmingham high schools took center stage recently, as they were honored by a historic women’s organization dedicated to excellence and community service.
Celebrating Future Talent
The Birmingham Chapter of The Links Incorporated recently hosted its National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) Junior Honors and Awards Day, shining a spotlight on 28 outstanding students. These honorees represent Carver High School, Ramsay High School, and Parker High School, all of whom have been active participants in their respective school-based NSBE Jr. chapters.
A Decade of STEM Support
For the past 10 years, The Links has remained steadfast in its support of these engineering clubs, viewing the investment as a vital component of its commitment to STEM education and youth development. As the organization celebrates its 70th anniversary, its dedication to fostering the next generation of Black engineers remains a core pillar of its mission.
Andrea Montgomery, a Links member who is also a professional mechanical engineer, emphasized the impact of the program. “The importance of the NSBE program is that it’s family, it’s a community, it’s a group of people who look like you,” Montgomery stated. She noted that seeing professionals in the classroom provides essential mentorship and visibility for students as they navigate their own career paths.
Student Success Stories
The celebration highlighted several impressive student achievements, notably that of Carver High School senior Camille Maiden. Supported by the NSBE Jr. program, Maiden had the life-changing opportunity to travel to Ghana. “For me, going to Africa was a lifetime experience,” Maiden shared. “Now that I’ve been 20 hours away from home, I think I’ll be okay during my four years of college and being able to occasionally visit home from college.”
As these young leaders continue to grow, the support from The Links and the NSBE Jr. network ensures they have the mentorship and exposure needed to thrive in the engineering field.
