50 players Alabama fans need to know: Can this veteran safety help Tide have nation’s best DB group?
Keon Sabb had a chance to go to the NFL. Instead, he's back with Alabama football.
EDITOR’S NOTE: Between now and the unofficial kickoff to the football preseason at SEC Media Days on July 20, 205focus.com is featuring one Alabama football player per day. We continue the series today with defensive back Keon Sabb.
The Veteran Anchor
6-foot-1, 208 pounds, Glassboro, N.J.
Keon Sabb faced a pivotal crossroad following the 2025 season. Alongside teammate Bray Hubbard, the defensive back had the opportunity to jump to the professional ranks. Had both opted for the NFL, the Crimson Tide would have been left with a significant experience gap in the secondary.
Instead, Sabb chose to return for his redshirt senior season. It is a win for Alabama’s defense, as the veteran looks to bolster his NFL draft stock while providing a steady hand to a defensive backfield he has anchored since arriving from Michigan prior to the 2024 season.
Building a Powerhouse Secondary
Sabb’s impact is well-documented. As a full-time starter at safety last year, he racked up 54 tackles, an interception, three pass breakups, and a sack. His grit became legendary among fans during a 2025 loss to Tennessee, where he battled through a season-ending foot injury to stay on the field.
Heading into the 2026 season, the defensive back group is arguably the strongest unit on the roster. While the Tide saw Domani Jackson depart, the return of starters like Sabb, Hubbard, cornerbacks Zabien Brown and Dijon Lee, and nickelback Red Morgan provides head coach Kalen DeBoer and defensive coordinator Kane Wommack with incredible continuity.
Sabb is the heartbeat of this unit. As a national champion—having earned a ring at Michigan in 2023—his leadership is invaluable. While depth pieces like Ivan Taylor continue to push for snaps, the veteran presence of the secondary suggests Alabama could field one of the most formidable defensive units in all of college football this year.
The Path to Improvement
Last season, the safety play proved to be a major strength for the Tide defense. With the talented younger cornerbacks now another year older and more experienced, the goal for 2026 is laser-focused.
For Sabb, the formula for success in his final collegiate campaign is straightforward: “Consistency,” he noted during spring practice. “Can you do it each and every snap? Once we get to that point where I felt we were close last year, I feel like we’ll take it to that next step this year.”
COMING THURSDAY: We feature Crimson Tide safety Bray Hubbard.
