Alabama commercial construction drives $20.1 billion economic impact, study finds
The industry has experienced substantial growth over the past eight years.
Alabama’s commercial construction sector is officially a massive engine for the state’s economy, generating a staggering $20.1 billion in total economic output. A recent update from the Associated Builders and Contractors of Alabama confirms the industry is hitting new heights, providing stable footing for 223,000 full-time jobs across the state.
A Major Pillar of Growth
The numbers highlight a significant expansion over the last eight years. The sector has surged from an economic impact of $11.9 billion in 2015 to its current $20.1 billion level, marking a 17% increase since 2021 alone. This industry now accounts for 4.7% of Alabama’s total gross domestic product, serving as a fundamental piece of the state's financial landscape.
Tax Revenue and Fiscal Impact
Beyond job creation, the industry is a primary contributor to public funding. In 2023, the sector delivered $746 million in state tax revenue. According to Tim Harrison, immediate past chairman of ABC of Alabama and president of Harrison Construction, that revenue plays a critical role in supporting schools, essential infrastructure, and local communities throughout the state.
Looking Ahead
Industry leaders are optimistic about the trajectory of the market. Dr. Keivan Deravi, the economist behind the report, projects that the sector's output could reach $23.2 billion by the time 2025 data is fully processed. This sentiment is echoed by Gov. Kay Ivey, who noted that since 2017, Alabama has attracted over $69 billion in total investment, creating more than 100,000 jobs. As reported by 205focus.com, the state's construction workforce remains a vital contributor to this ongoing success, helping build Alabama’s reputation both at home and on the global stage.
