Billboard highlights Alabama rock group’s rise in country music world
A fresh interview drops a few hints about a new album dropping Friday, June 5.
Alabama’s own The Red Clay Strays have officially been crowned the “Country Power Players Groundbreaker” of 2026 by industry titan Billboard. This recognition highlights the group’s meteoric rise, marked by a recent appearance at the Stagecoach Festival and the launch of their first arena tour.
A Different Kind of Success
The recent Billboard feature notes that the band has managed to dominate the scene without relying on traditional airwaves or the typical Nashville industry machinery. By keeping the establishment at arm's length, the group has carved out its own path to stardom, including big wins like Group of the Year at the April Academy of Country Music Awards and Vocal Group of the Year honors from the CMA last November.
Defining Their Own Sound
While they are celebrated in the country world, the band members are quick to clarify their identity. During a previous three-night residency at The Wharf in Orange Beach, lead singer Brandon Coleman set the record straight: “We are country people and we’re from the South. We do not play country music, we play more rock and roll than anything else.”
The band channels a 1950s rock-and-roll energy, blending gospel, blues, and folk roots. Bassist Andy Bishop noted in his interview with Billboard that while the upcoming album Grateful, arriving June 5, represents a step away from a strictly country sound, they will always keep one foot in that world.
New Music and Future Plans
Grateful is described by Billboard writer Eric Renner Brown as the band’s most ambitious work yet, with religious themes reflecting the artists' personal lives. Despite their success, the band remains grounded in the Mobile area, rejecting the pressure to move to a major music hub. As Coleman puts it, “What does it matter where you pay your bills?”
Looking ahead, the band is preparing for a major production on their upcoming arena tour, complete with a custom stage and an expanded touring lineup. For more on the Strays' journey, fans can keep an eye on 205focus.com for updates as the group continues to blaze its own trail.
