A 21-year-old man is now in jail after authorities say he assaulted a security guard in downtown Birmingham, leading the guard to shoot him.
The incident occurred at 11:16 p.m. Saturday in the 700 block of Richard Arrington Jr. Boulevard.
Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies and Birmingham police responded to the scene, which Birmingham officers had secured upon arrival.
The man, who had been shot in the upper body, was taken to UAB Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and is now in jail.
Sheriff’s spokesman Henry Irby reported that a member of the Jefferson County Courthouse Security Team encountered the man in the parking area of the 2121 Building. The security guard followed him to the rear of the parking garage and into an alley.
A verbal altercation escalated into a physical assault, Irby said.
The security guard, who sustained facial injuries, then fired a shot, striking Ty Austin Bell, identified as a transient.
Bell was under guard at UAB Hospital until his release and was booked into the Jefferson County Jail at 6:33 a.m. Sunday.
He is charged with second-degree assault, with bond set at $10,000.
