More Alabamians now eligible for WIC: See if you qualify

A wider range of Alabama families may now find themselves eligible for crucial food assistance. The Alabama Department of Public Health recently announced that income guidelines for the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Program have officially increased for 2026, opening the door for more residents to participate.

Who is eligible?

The WIC program is designed to support the health of women and children. Eligibility is available to women who are pregnant, have given birth within the last six months, or are currently breastfeeding, provided they meet specific income requirements.

Under current standards, individuals may qualify if their income is at or below 185 percent of the federal poverty level. According to recent federal updates, these guidelines increased by approximately 2.6% compared to 2025 to account for inflation.

Benefits of the program

Participants receive monthly food benefits tailored to their needs. Current monthly allotments provide $26 for each qualifying child, $48 for pregnant and postpartum women, and $52 for breastfeeding women.

"WIC is here to help women, infants, and children in Alabama improve their overall health by providing nutritious foods, nutrition education, and breastfeeding support," said Pam Galloway, Alabama WIC director.

How to apply

The health department encourages all potentially eligible families to reach out to their local county health department or WIC agency to start the application process.
