NFL linebacker arrested on domestic violence charges, including biting phone

Denver Broncos outside linebacker Jonathon Cooper is facing serious legal trouble. The 28-year-old was taken into custody on Friday, booked on suspicion of two counts of domestic violence and one count of criminal mischief, according to official Douglas County jail records.

Details of the Altercation

An arrest affidavit obtained by 9News outlines a volatile situation that occurred at the linebacker's apartment. Authorities allege the incident stemmed from an argument over accusations of cheating. The report states that after the woman involved grabbed Cooper’s phone to search it, a physical struggle ensued, with Cooper allegedly bracing his neck against hers to prevent her from accessing the device.

The situation escalated further when Cooper reportedly told the woman he intended to destroy her phone, ultimately biting and breaking the device. Parker Police executed the arrest at 11:16 p.m. on Thursday, and Cooper was officially booked into jail early Friday morning at 2:38 a.m.

Court Proceedings and NFL Career

Cooper made his first appearance in the 23rd Judicial District Court on Friday. A follow-up disposition hearing has been scheduled for this coming Monday.

On the field, Cooper has been a mainstay for the Denver Broncos defense. A seventh-round draft selection out of Ohio State in 2021, the linebacker is preparing for his sixth season with the franchise. Cooper has started every game since 2023, racking up 31 1/2 career sacks. His production reached new heights during the 2024 campaign, where he notched a career-best 10 1/2 sacks, earning him a four-year, $54 million contract extension. During last season, he continued to be a disruptive force, contributing eight sacks and adding another in the playoffs.
