US Steel has $536 million annual impact for Alabama
The company has 328 Alabama-based suppliers engaged.
A fresh economic impact study reveals that U.S. Steel remains a massive driver for the Alabama economy, generating a total impact of $536.2 million. The analysis, conducted by Parker Strategy Group, highlights the company's significant footprint during the 2024 fiscal year.
Economic Footprint and Growth
Beyond the half-billion-dollar impact, the report underscores the importance of U.S. Steel to the state's workforce and tax base. The company supported 1,963 jobs across Alabama and contributed $12.4 million in state and local tax revenue. Additionally, the industrial giant fostered a robust supply chain, engaging 328 Alabama-based suppliers in its operations.
Modernizing Alabama Operations
This economic activity is bolstered by ongoing modernization efforts at local facilities. Last November, the company announced a new $75 million premium thread line at its Fairfield tubular operations plant, a project that added 44 jobs. These upgrades follow the major merger with Nippon Steel, which was finalized last June.
Fairfield has long been a hub for these investments. Back in 2020, U. S. Steel launched a $412 million electric arc furnace at the site, which maintains a production capacity of 1.6 million tons of steel annually.
Reflecting on the company’s deep-rooted influence, State Rep. Kelvin Datcher noted the human impact of these industrial operations. "As much as U. S. Steel means to us here in Birmingham, it is a common connector between communities all across this country," Datcher said. "It was the same kind of jobs for the same kind of folks in different communities and different states—but it meant the same thing for all of them: owning a home, putting kids through college."
