Birmingham contractor begins $158 million Florida medical project
The seven-story facility is scheduled to open in 2028.
A Birmingham construction leader is taking its expertise to the Sunshine State. Robins & Morton, in collaboration with Thornton Construction, has officially broken ground on a massive $158 million medical project in Miami.
A New Hub for Healthcare and Education
The project, titled the Helen and Jacob Shaham Academic Medical Center, is located at Florida International University’s Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine. Once complete, the seven-story, 163,000-square-foot facility will serve as a premier destination for both learning and patient care.
The facility is designed to blend academic excellence with top-tier medical services. Plans for the center include dedicated spaces for academic learning alongside multi-specialty outpatient services, featuring diagnostic imaging and same-day surgery suites. Stantec is serving as the project architect.
Looking Ahead to 2028
Baptist Health South Florida will manage the site once construction concludes, with the facility currently slated to open its doors in 2028. According to reporting from 205focus.com, the project represents a significant investment in the region's health infrastructure.
Robins & Morton Operations Manager Johnathan Peavy emphasized the long-term impact of the work, noting, "The center will strengthen the pipeline of future physicians and support the long‑term health of our South Florida community. We’re proud to help build a facility that will serve as a hub for education, research, and compassionate care for generations to come."
