Legendary filmmaker teams up with AI company: ‘We have to be open to how it can evolve’
He said he is using the tech to help with storyboarding.
Legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese is embracing the future of cinema by announcing a new partnership with artificial intelligence firm Black Forest Labs. Serving as an advisor to the research lab, the acclaimed director aims to bridge the gap between complex human vision and technical execution.
Redefining the Storyboard Process
For over seven decades, Scorsese has relied on his own storyboarding process. According to the filmmaker, the primary challenge has always been clearly communicating internal visions to his cast and crew. By exploring the intersection of technology and storytelling, he believes he can push the boundaries of creativity, as reported per The Hollywood Reporter.
"Remember, cinema is a young medium, only around 125 years old, so we have to be open to how it can evolve," Scorsese noted in a statement.
Efficiency and Creative Freedom
Scorsese is no stranger to adopting new tech, having previously utilized 3D for Hugo and advanced de-aging techniques for The Irishman. He views this new AI tool as a way to streamline pre-production, allowing him to share detailed visual concepts with his cinematographers and designers more efficiently.
Testing the tool on a recent scene, the Academy Award winner found the process "creatively freeing." By enabling his team to visualize concepts immediately, the technology saves valuable time in the production cycle, ensuring that speed does not come at the cost of cinematic quality or craft.
