New Gulf Shores seafood spot lets customers build their own steamer pots
The North Carolina seafood franchise tailored its menu to Gulf Coast tastes at its new Alabama location.
The coastal flavors of North Carolina have officially arrived in Alabama, but with a distinct, local twist. Topsail Steamer, a burgeoning seafood franchise, has officially opened its doors in Swiger Square in Gulf Shores, blending its proven business model with the unique tastes of the Alabama Gulf Coast.
A Localized Experience
While the franchise roots itself in North Carolina, local owner Pat Mahon emphasized that catering to the preferences of Alabama diners was a top priority. A key component of this strategy is the sourcing of ingredients. Instead of shipping in product, Mahon is leaning on local purveyors such as Aquilla, Billy’s, and Bon Secour for the restaurant’s shrimp.
This commitment to the community extends beyond the seafood. The restaurant, which is now open seven days a week, sources corn from local produce suppliers and features pies and cornbread crafted by a bakery in Fairhope. Perhaps most importantly, the menu now features locally beloved Conecuh sausage as an alternative to traditional andouille or kielbasa.
The 'Steam and Eat' Concept
Topsail Steamer is bringing a fresh approach to the classic Gulf Coast seafood boil. The brand operates on a simple, experiential motto: take home, steam, and eat. Customers can choose from two pot sizes—the 'Low Tider' for groups of two to three, and the 'High Tider' for five to six. Each kit includes paper for the table, spices, sauces, and butter. According to Mahon, the reusable, recyclable pots serve double duty, perfect for later use as flower planters or coolers.
Crafting Your Own Boil
While the restaurant offers seven signature buckets, the real fun lies in customization. Every bucket starts with a base of corn and red bliss potatoes, allowing diners to load them up with shrimp, day-boat scallops from Apalachicola, or crab legs. Mahon is even exploring the possibility of adding seasonal crawfish to the menu to better accommodate local cravings.
Whether it is a casual gathering of friends or a birthday celebration, Mahon believes the atmosphere surrounding these boils is exactly what Gulf Shores visitors and residents are looking for.
