Popular Birmingham nightspot closing weeks after shooting: ‘The end of an era’

Nana Funks, a longtime staple of Birmingham’s Lakeview District nightlife, is officially closing its doors. The popular dance club and bar, which has been a fixture in the scene since 2006, announced on Facebook that this coming weekend will be its final period of operation.

An Era Ends

In a heartfelt farewell to its patrons, the establishment expressed gratitude to the customers, staff, and DJs who helped define the venue over the last two decades. "To every customer who became family, every familiar face at the bar, every DJ, every staff member, and everyone who chose to spend their nights with us... THANK YOU. You made Nana Funks what it was," the statement read.

Safety Concerns

The closure follows a period of heightened scrutiny surrounding the venue. In April, a shooting occurred inside the club that left one person seriously injured and another individual grazed by a bullet. The incident prompted city officials to review the business's license amid growing frustration regarding the club's safety protocols.

Following the shooting, management had publicly stated that they were implementing enhanced security measures, including the addition of more personnel and a heightened police presence, in an effort to prevent future incidents.

One Last Dance

Despite the recent challenges, the club is inviting the community to gather for a final celebration. According to the venue's schedule, the doors will be open until 5 a.m. this Saturday for one last night of business.

"We’ve truly enjoyed the good times, the people, and the relationships built within these walls more than words can say," the club shared. "Come get funky with us one last time this weekend as we celebrate the end of an era the only way we know how."
