Family of siblings who drowned in Turkey Creek ‘struggling to cope with unimaginable loss’
King Scott, 12, and Lola Scott, 10, were both students at Tarrant Intermediate School.
The family of two children who tragically drowned at Turkey Creek in Pinson this past weekend is now reaching out to the community for support as they prepare to lay the beloved siblings to rest.
King Scott, 12, and his 10-year-old sister, Lola Scott—both students at Tarrant Intermediate School—were pulled from the water on Saturday afternoon. Despite the desperate efforts of first responders and family members, the siblings were later pronounced dead at Children’s of Alabama.
A Family in Mourning
Kimeshia Hemphill, a close co-worker of the children’s mother, Lolisa Hood, has launched a GoFundMe page to assist with the overwhelming expenses following this heartbreaking loss. Hood has also established her own fundraising initiative to help navigate the future while caring for her surviving child, Brian.
Reflecting on her children, Hood described them as vibrant, loving individuals. Lola, a girl with dreams of becoming a third-grade teacher, was known for her infectious energy. King was remembered as a devoted protector who always looked out for his family.
The Tragic Sequence of Events
In a previous interview with 205focus.com, Hood shared that the family had shifted plans to Turkey Creek after other destinations were closed. While she ensured the children were aware of the rules and initially kept them in a shallow, knee-deep area, the situation changed when three of her children turned toward a section of the creek measuring 8 to 9 feet deep.
When she noticed 14-year-old Brian struggling, Hood immediately moved to help. The scene quickly became a desperate rescue mission involving bystanders, including two women and a group of men who jumped into the water to assist. While responders from Palmerdale, Center Point, and Glenwood Fire and Rescue, along with Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies, initiated CPR and transported the children with heartbeats, the loss was ultimately unavoidable.
How to Help
The family is currently facing the unimaginable task of burying two children. Hemphill noted that all contributions will be directed toward funeral costs, counseling, and essential living expenses to allow Hood time to heal without the burden of financial strain.
