Popular discount retailer shutting down 350 stores, sparing only 6 states
The chain’s downsizing is part of a long-running effort to optimize business operations and improve long-term growth.
As inflation and rising grocery costs continue to squeeze household budgets, many shoppers are turning to discount retailers for relief. However, not every budget-friendly chain is weathering the current economic climate. A major retail player is significantly trimming its footprint across the nation.
Significant Downsizing Underway
An analysis conducted by LocalFalcon reveals that Family Dollar has shuttered at least 350 stores between July 7, 2025, and May 12, 2026. This move marks a 4.69% reduction in the chain's total store count.
Impact on Alabama and Beyond
Alabama has been hit particularly hard by the closures. The state saw 21 locations shutter, resulting in an 11.9% reduction of its footprint—the second-highest percentage loss in the country—dropping from 176 stores down to 155. Alabama joins Arkansas, Kentucky, and Tennessee as some of the most impacted areas, with those four states collectively accounting for 73 permanent store closures.
In terms of total volume, Texas leads the nation with 35 closures, followed by Ohio with 28 and Georgia with 26. Conversely, only six states were left untouched by this wave of downsizing: Idaho, Massachusetts, Montana, South Dakota, Utah, and Wyoming.
The Future of Family Dollar
According to the company, these closures are a strategic effort to optimize business operations and foster long-term growth. "Over the past year, we’ve taken disciplined actions to strengthen the foundation of Family Dollar, and the progress we’re seeing reflects the focus and commitment of our teams across the organization," said Family Dollar Chairman and CEO Duncan McNaughton in a statement to The Street.
Family Dollar, which now operates roughly 7,112 stores across the U.S., was sold by Dollar Tree in 2025 and is currently under the ownership of Brigade Capital Management and Macellum Capital Management.
