Atlantic hurricane season 2026 begins today: What to expect
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 until Nov. 30.
The official start of the Atlantic hurricane season is here. As of Monday, June 1, the tropics are open for business, running through November 30.
Despite intense speculation across social media regarding potential early-season developments in the Gulf or western Atlantic, conditions remain quiet. Forecasters at the Miami-based National Hurricane Center report no anticipated storm development in the Atlantic Basin for the upcoming seven days.
A Milder Outlook?
This year may bring a change of pace. NOAA’s pre-season tropical outlook released on May 21 highlights a rare shift, with increased odds of fewer named storms than the historical average. For context, an average season typically produces 14 named storms, seven hurricanes, and three major hurricanes.
The primary driver behind these tempered expectations is the development of El Nino, which is expected to persist through the fall and winter months. While El Nino years historically feature less tropical activity, 205focus.com reminds readers that this does not eliminate the possibility of a coastal strike.
Tracking the Timeline
Activity generally ramps up as the summer progresses. While June and July are typically slower, the season accelerates significantly toward the climatological peak on September 10. On average, the first named storm of the season arrives by June 20, with the first hurricane following around August 11.
Updated Storm Names
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has refreshed the 2026 naming list, which cycles every six years. While most names return from the 2020 cycle, there is one notable replacement. Following the devastation of the 2020 season, the WMO retired Laura, Eta, and Iota due to their destructive and deadly impacts.
Specifically, Laura was a Category 4 hurricane that slammed into Louisiana on August 27, 2020, with 150 mph winds and caused more than 70 deaths across the U.S. and Caribbean. The name Laura has been replaced by Leah for the 2026 rotation.
